Punt a muzzle on an artist's snout!

I was thinking and considering touching this subject for some time, not sure if it was even worth of my attention, especially in face of more urgent and serious events that unfolded lately in my country that caught my attention. But after giving it a thought I decided to express my opinion in this matter seeing as it is the second most serious matter that occurred in Poland in June of this year.

As an artist (self-declared) I highly value my personal freedom of speech and freedom of artistic expression as well as freedom of speech and artistic expression of other people. Of course freedom of expression has nothing to do with quality or good taste, but that’s irrelevant for the subject at hand (bad and poor art is just that, but the principle still applies).

So, what happened? There was a cultural event in Poznań called Malta Festival; part of this event was a close theatrical spectacle by Rodrigo Garcia “Golgotha Picnic” that was called off due to protests. Protesters claimed that the show was a blasphemy.

To be perfectly clear, I never saw it, I didn’t read it and I don’t know how it looks like. I do not know if it is a good play or not, if it has any artistic value or if it’s just waste of time. The quality of that play is not the issue here. The issue is the terror.

You see, the play was cancelled due to threat of riots that Bishop of Poznań was encouraging! Number of Catholic fundamentalists protested against the play. It is their right to protest, that’s freedom of speech too. But freedom of speech ends the moment when someone starts to threat with violence and that’s what happened. No one did anything in that matter. Police claimed to be helpless and not able to guarantee safety of spectators and actors. Our Minister of Internal Affairs didn’t even bat an eyelid upon hearing that forces that work under his department (Police) claim to be unable to perform their duty.

All that hurt because I feel that as an artist I am discriminated. But what hurts just as bad is the fact that people who never saw or read the play and honestly cannot know what it is really about, protest, insult and pour pure hatred (while praying at the same time – hypocrisy anyone?) over those who just wish to use their freedom.

In Poland offending someone’s religious feelings is punishable. Of course person who felt offended has to notify the prosecutor or the police of the fact of being offended. But to be offended one had to face the offense in some way, and in here no offence took place because the play was never performed on stage. So how anyone could be offended by an event that never took place?

Catholic fundamentalists (just like any and all other fundamentalists in the history of ever) claim to be repressed, discriminated, persecuted, overpowered and oppressed by anyone who is not them or scared by them (and thus sitting quietly and not uttering a single word against them) while at the same time terrorising those who dare to have a different point of view or not share their beliefs, or be too liberal for their liking.
These fundamentalists just managed to silence an artist that wasn’t even planning on showing his art in public but just to those who willingly agreed to view it. They silenced him just because they wanted to extort their own freedom by smothering freedom of other people.

Concluding, this is how artistic freedom dies: in the sound of insults, threats and holier than thou indignation.

Długo zastanawiałam się i rozmyślałam nad dotykaniem tego tematu, nie byłam pewna czy jest w ogóle wart mojej uwagi, zwłaszcza w porównaniu z innymi, pilniejszymi wydarzeniami, jakie miały ostatnio miejsce w moim kraju i przykuły moją uwagę. Ale po zastanowieniu się, postanowiłam jednak wyrazić swoją opinię w tej, drugiej najważniejszej sprawie, jaka miała miejsce tego czerwca.

Jako artystka (samozwańcza) wysoko cenię sobie swoją osobistą wolność słowa i ekspresji artystycznej, tak jak szanuję obie te wolności u innych ludzi. Rzecz jasna, wolność artystyczna ma się nijak, do jakości sztuki czy nawet dobrego smaku, ale nie to ma tutaj znaczenie (marna sztuka jest tylko i wyłącznie gniotem, ale zasady ciągle obowiązują).

Więc co takiego się stało? W Poznaniu miało miejsce wydarzenie artystyczne zatytułowane Festiwal Malta; częścią tego festiwalu miała być sztuka teatralna Rodrigo Garcii „Golgota Picnic” niedostępna dla szerokiej publiczności i wystawiona w zamkniętej Sali, która została odwołana w skutek protestów. Protestujący twierdzili, że jest bluźniercza.

Żeby było jasne, ja nie widziałam tej sztuki, nie czytałam jej, nie wiem nawet jak wygląda w teatrze. Nie wiem czy to dobre przedstawienie, czy nie, czy ma jakąś wartość artystyczną czy jest tylko stratą czasu. Nie jakość przedstawienia jest tu problemem. Jest nim strach.

Bo widzicie, sztuka została odwołana po tym jak Biskup Poznania nawoływał do zamieszek. Pewna liczna fundamentalistów katolickich zaprotestowała przeciwko tej sztuce. Takie jest ich prawo, to też jest forma wolności słowa. Ale wolność słowa kończy się w momencie, kiedy w ruch idą groźby użycia przemocy a to właśnie miało miejsce. I nikt nic nie zrobił. Policja stwierdziła, że jest bezradna i nie może zagwarantować bezpieczeństwa widzom i aktorom. Nasz Minister Spraw Wewnętrznych nawet nie mrugnął słysząc, że siły mu podległe (Policja) przyznają się do niemożności wykonywania swoich obowiązków.

Zabolało, bo jako artystka czuję się dyskryminowana. Ale tak samo boli fakt, że ludzie, którzy nigdy nie widzieli tej sztuki, nie czytali jej i zasadniczo nie znają jej treści, obrażają i wylewają swoją nienawiść (modląc się przy tym głośno – ktoś zamawiał hipokryzję na wynos?) na tych, którzy chcieli skorzystać ze swojej własnej wolności.

W Polsce obrażanie czyichś uczuć religijnych jest karane. Oczywiście osoba, której uczucia zostały obrażone musi sama zgłosić się do prokuratora czy na policję i powiadomić o obrazie uczuć religijnych. Ale żeby móc być obrażonym, trzeba najpierw jakoś napotkać na źródło obrazy, a tutaj żadne obrażanie uczuć religijnych miejsca nie miało, ponieważ do wystawienia sztuki nie doszło. No więc jak ktokolwiek może być obrażony przez wydarzenie, które nie miało miejsca?

Katoliccy fundamentaliści (tak samo jak i inni fundamentaliści w całej historii ludzkości) twierdzą, że są represjonowani, dyskryminowani, prześladowani, zwalczani i opresjonowani przez wszystkich tych, którzy nie należą do ich grupy albo się ich boją (i przez to siedzą cicho bojąc się pisnąć słóweńko sprzeciwu); w tym samym czasie terroryzując tych, którzy mają czelność mieć inne zdanie albo nie podzielać ich przekonań, albo być zbyt liberalnym w ich mniemaniu.
Ci fundamentaliści właśnie uciszyli artystę, który nawet nie planował pokazywać swojej sztuki szerokiej publiczności a tylko tym, którzy z własnej, nieprzymuszonej woli zdecydowali się ją obejrzeć. Uciszyli go, bo chcieli wymusić własną wolność kosztem wolności innych.

Konkludując, tak właśnie umiera wolność artystyczna: przy akompaniamencie wyzwisk, gróźb, świętego oburzenia.
